Good hygiene from an early age

We believe it is important to build positive dental experiences and to develop great oral hygiene habits in children from an early age and not just check and clean their teeth.

There is nothing like a bad dental experience to put you off dentists for a lifetime. So we want to avoid that by giving your child many great memories and experiences.

Dental care through the early years

It is equally important to teach new parents everything they need to know about caring for their new child's teeth.

If you're a first time parent we recommend you visit us as soon as the first teeth start coming through. This way we can help show you how to take good care of your newborn's teeth and go over any questions you may have. At this visit we want to simply help support you to give your child the best dental start in life.

Create positive habits

As the child grows the aim is to continue along this path with the goal to have them cleaning their teeth well by the time their adult teeth start to come through at around age 6. We also want them to be aware of good and bad (sugary) foods at this age too.

Every family is different and you may want to discuss your dental needs before making an appointment. We'd love to help with any questions that you have.

At 2 years old

We like to have the next appointment with your child at about the age of 2 years old. This is when your child can just understand that they are at the dentist and chances are their teeth have not been in their mouth for long enough to have any dental problems. This is really an opportunity to introduce your child to the dentist and make it a positive experience for them.

Sometimes they let us look at their teeth and give their teeth a quick polish - other times they don't. That's ok too. The point of the visit is simply to get comfortable with visiting us and have a dentist poke around their mouth. It is also anther chance to touch base with the parents to answer any questions they may have about diet and oral hygiene.

Ages 6 to 12 and beyond

Between the ages of about 6 and 12 your child will be going from a mouth full of baby teeth to their full set of adult teeth. This is also a period of lots of growth. We generally want to also continue a once or twice a year routine here to monitor the eruption of adult teeth as they come through to ensure they are protected. We are also keeping an eye out in case braces/orthodontics are needed.

After this point our main priority is to continue monitoring for orthodontic problems with repeated reinforcement of good oral hygiene and diet principles to enure that your child builds good habits for a lifetime. This means once or twice a year visits to continue encouraging good behaviors and ensure they are keeping their new adult teeth in great condition.
