There are many causes of tooth discoloration, ranging from natural tooth genetics to diet, oral hygiene habits, smoking, cavities, certain dental treatments, fillings, etc.
It is important the dentist identifies the cause to determine if whitening is appropriate and safe for your situation. Whitening will only work in some cases and if the correct products are not used properly it can cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums.
With this case tooth whitening was performed with daily use of professional whitening gel for a period of approximately 1 month using customized professional application trays. Whitening results vary from person to person but this is a typical example.
When used appropriately tooth whitening is a very safe, effective and lasting treatment.
Case Study
The everyday workhorse of dentistry is the composite resin restoration or natural tooth colored filling. This is applied in layers to the tooth as a putty and built up to form the final shape/contour of the tooth. This is considered a long term solution for restoring small to medium sized fillings or cavities and can also be used as an alternative to full or partial crowns when budget is a concern.
In this case we have multiple failing amalgam restorations and cracked teeth. Porcelain or ceramic crowns would have been the ideal solution in this situation, however due to budgetary constraints we decided to restore these teeth using composite resin.
A rubber dam was placed to isolate the area, the teeth were prepared and the teeth were restored back to their natural shape, color and contour using composite resin.
